| John L. Ward was born in San Diego, California. He received his B.S. from Brigham Young University. His M.S. in retailing was earned at New York University where he graduated as valedictorian of his class. Following his mission to England, he became a specialist in psychological warfare as he served with the U.S. Army. In one of his Church assignments, he organized weekly dances for LDS young adults throughout Southern California. It was at one of those socials that he met Sondra Pinegar. They married and now have nine children.
The author owns a family furniture store and investment company in Long Beach, California. He has been president of Associated Volume Buyers (an association of retail stores), the president of the Board of Education of the Long Beach Unified School District, and chairman of several community groups fighting pornography, crime, drugs, and blight. He is currently on the California State Board of Education, which guides over 1000 school districts with 4 million students. After undergoing open-heart surgery, the author became a distance runner.
Brother Ward has been a bishop and a high council advisor to youth and young adults. As this book goes to press, he is a counselor to the president of the California, Los Angeles Mission. In his church, business, and community activities, John Ward is recognized by family and associates as a "father first."
