SPRINGVILLEMrs. Mary Kaye Huntsman, Utah’s First Lady, heads up the Utah Commission on Literacy, and has selected a Book of the Month for April. Every month she selects a book which is then provided free of charge to each of the school libraries within the State of Utah. Each school will make a push for their students and teachers to read this book during April.
April’s Book of the Month is Make Me a Memory, written by popular author Tamra Norton, published by Cedar Fort Inc. In her book Norton tackles the difficult topic of deployment. The main character is a 10-year old girl who has to cope while her father is deployed to Iraq. Her family relocates to Edna, Idaho where they live with her grandparents, one of which has Alzheimer’s. The story is filled with courage and humor, and teaches children how to bravely overcome the challenges they must face. Each book has an educator’s guide to lead classes through a simple lesson once students have read the book.
Along with providing all Utah schools a copy of Make Me a Memory, Mrs. Huntsman will be giving away one hundred copies to military families at Hill Air Force Base on April 26, 2006.
MNorton who resides in Texas, will be visiting Utah for school assemblies, and book-signings from April 10th-22nd. Norton has two assemblies scheduled each day; the press is encouraged to attend these events. A list of her schedule is included in this packet.
